Our Problem

We all make mistakes and need compassion and forgiveness to grow and learn. But our problem goes far deeper than ignorance. When we knowingly act against our conscience, we often dismiss it as human nature. God, however, calls it sin.

Only Human

Sin is our tendency to put ourselves first, often at the expense of others and of God. When we are stubborn and try to justify our bad actions such as lying, cheating, stealing, or hurting others, we don't just hurt Him, we hurt ourselves, hardening our heart over time.

Without God's forgiveness, our sins weigh us down with the fear of judgment, leaving us unsettled and fearful of death. Hiding, fleeing, or suppressing the truth might seem like solutions, but they never truly resolve our problem.

Nevertheless, there is hope.

The Only Solution

God is righteous and just, so He must punish sin. However, He is also merciful and the embodiment of love. Death is something that we must all face one day because of sin, but the free gift of God is eternal life, received through forgiveness.

We recognise love when wrongs are made right, when we receive forgiveness, or when we choose to forgive others. However, we cannot atone for our sins against God on our own because we are imperfect and unable to pay the price that justice demands.

In God’s perfect timing, Jesus Christ, our Creator and God incarnate, set aside His glory and power to become human and solve the problem of sin and death once for all. He lived a perfectly sinless life, willingly laid down His life on a Roman cross, was buried, and rose to life three days later. In doing so He proved His authority over life and death, and made a way for us to have true peace with God by paying the penalty for our sins with His own blood.

No one has greater love than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. John 15:13

True love keeps no record of wrongs, and it is based on absolute trust, not by works, merit, or religious rules.

The free gift of God is eternal life, received by repenting of our sins and trusting in Jesus Christ as our Lord and Saviour, setting us free from unrighteousness and making us a new creation in Christ.

Consider the flowers in the field, and the sparrows in the air. As a human made in God’s image, you are precious to God.

God's creation is rich in diversity and wonder, and this includes you. You are not just a number in the conglomerate of humanity- you are one of a kind, with your unique background, appearance, skills, and interests. Even though we all fall short of perfection, God has also given us grace in the joy of life.

...or anything else that you enjoy, your talents and interests can be used to respect and honour God, and reflect His character, which is love. But it is also your choice as to how you want to live your life- according to your way, which leads to death, or according to God’s way, which leads to eternal life.

The choices we make and the goals we strive for reveal our heart and shape our future.

Many people live in denial and consider themselves good people, but "good enough" is not good enough for heaven. We must be perfect for our Heavenly Father is perfect. It is only by giving our life over to Jesus, our Creator, that we can receive God's forgiveness, be born again, and rest in His strength so we can overcome sin, know true love, know our purpose, and dwell with the Lord in eternity.

Forgiveness begins with communication, and God responds to us when we are humble and sincere. If you are ready to turn from your sins and commit your way to Jesus, you can try praying something like this.

Tea and biscuits

Dear God in Heaven,

Thank You for my life and Your love.

I know that I am a sinner and I am sorry for all of my sins.

I believe Jesus died on the cross to pay for my sins and He rose again to life so I can be redeemed and reconciled to You.

I trust in Jesus as my Lord and Saviour and surrender my life to You. Please forgive me and help me with my weaknesses, my doubts, and my fears. Help me to live righteously and make the right choices that honour You.

In Jesus' name,

Amen

You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it, You shall love your neighbour as yourself.
Matthew 22:37-39

God’s power is made perfect in our weaknesses. We can grow closer to God by rejecting sinful habits and choices, and growing in the knowledge of Him through His Word, the Bible, which is His love letter to us. If you don't know where to start, you can begin at Genesis to understand our origins, Romans to learn about salvation, or Matthew, Mark, Luke, or John to learn more about Jesus' ministry.
