In a world filled with chaos, fear, and existential uncertainty, true peace, hope, and purpose can seem like an impossible dream. Yet, Jesus Christ continues to transform people who hear and understand His call to repentance and salvation. The question you should be asking yourself isn't who Jesus is to others, but who is He to you personally?

When we’re honest with ourselves, our conscience compels us to ask, how can we be made perfect? Our hearts long for eternity, yet we also know that death is a fearful reality that we must all face at some point. Despite our best efforts and good deeds, we know we can’t save ourselves. We need a saviour.

Jesus stepped out of the glory of heaven to be born of a virgin named Mary in Bethlehem over 2000 years ago. He arrived at just the right time in history to solve the problem of sin and death for us once for all.

As God incarnate, Jesus lived a perfectly sinless life, teaching His followers the way of love and authenticating Himself with miracles, the forgiveness of people's sins, and the fulfilment of numerous specific prophecies. He was not always well-received though, and religious leaders often felt threatened by His power and authority.

Motivated by pride and jealousy, leaders tempted by power orchestrated Jesus’ cruel torture and crucifixion on the Roman cross. Nevertheless, Jesus laid down His life willingly for us, for three days after His death and burial He rose to life, proving to everyone that He is true, He is God, and He has the keys to death and life.

Jesus' death was the atoning payment for our sins, and His resurrection is proof that it is finished. His defeat over death is His free gift to us, granting us redemption, forgiveness and reconciliation to God, true peace, and eternal life if we choose to trust in Jesus as our Lord, Saviour, and Redeemer.

Our unrighteous actions burden us with guilt and fear, and separate us from our Creator who is holy, righteous, and cannot abide by sin. But because God loves us, He gave His only Son, Jesus, so that we can be saved from the consequences of our sins which is death.

To receive the gift of Jesus' perfect righteousness, bought with Jesus' blood at the cross, we must come to Him in faith to accept it. Jesus is the only name under heaven by which we can be saved. In His own words: "I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me."

Rejecting Jesus means we are by default following sin's broad road to death and eternal torment. No amount of religious rules or good deeds can solve the root of our problem, which is sin. As imperfect beings, we can never achieve true righteousness on our own. The Old Testament laws actually reveal the dire state of the human condition, which is why we need God’s grace and forgiveness, without which we truly have no hope.

This is why Jesus came to Earth, to seek and save the lost, and perfectly fulfil the law with love. Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. By renouncing sin and wholeheartedly choosing to follow and trust in Jesus, we can not only be reconciled to God in peace and love, we learn how to love and be truly loved from our Creator who does not lie, has a plan and purpose for our future, and wants us to live a full, abundant life through a real, personal relationship with Him.

The call to repentance and salvation is a prompt for you to examine your life and decide the path you want to walk— according to the truth, which leads to eternal life, or the way of sin and denial, which leads to death.

A Roman Centurion's perspective

Amidst the chaos at Golgotha, a Roman centurion stood at the cross and witnessed Jesus' last moments. Darkness had enveloped the land for hours as Jesus hung on the cross, and after He breathed His last breath, a great earthquake occurred. At the same time, graves were opened and the curtain of the Jewish temple, which was around ~18 metres tall, was torn in two from top to bottom. The centurion and those who were with him witnessed what took place and were filled with awe. The centurion exclaimed: "Truly this man was the Son of God!"

The Righteousness of Faith

As one of Jesus' apostles, Thomas witnessed Jesus' miracles and teachings first-hand. Yet, Jesus' resurrection was so incredible that not even Thomas could believe it until he saw and touched Jesus' hands and side for himself. Jesus said to Thomas “Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.” Thomas' encounter with the risen Jesus is a reminder that even though God is all-powerful, righteousness to God is found in simple faith intertwined with hope and love, growing from something even as small as a mustard seed.

And when they came to the place that is called The Skull, there they crucified him, and the criminals, one on his right and one on his left. And Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.” And they cast lots to divide his garments.

The New Covenant: How to Be Saved

Jesus is the only way to heaven. As our Creator and Redeemer, only He has the power and authority to make us perfect and give us eternal life with Him. In John 3:3, Jesus says 'Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.'

In the Bible, we learn that righteousness is trusting in God. Salvation begins with a conscious act of faith in order to make belief into a reality. It is a choice to choose to submit to Jesus instead of our sins. Following Jesus also means counting the cost of your commitment.

Prayer is how we communicate with God, and it is your sincerity and humility that really matters. If you are unsure about Jesus or what to do next, you can be honest and ask Him for understanding, help, and faith. Jesus already knows everything about you, and He will meet you where you are at if you come to Him in humility.

If you would like to turn to Jesus now you can try praying something like this to get started.

Dear Lord Jesus,

I know that I'm a sinner, and I ask for your forgiveness and mercy.

I believe you died and rose again to redeem me from my sins, and I want to accept your gift and be made perfect.

From this point forward I want to follow you as my Lord and Saviour. Please help me to walk in faith and to pursue righteousness instead of my sins. Help me to be the person you created me to be and help me to overcome my weaknesses.

Thank you for bringing me to this point in my life. Thank you for your amazing love and grace!

Amen

“The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart” (that is, the word of faith that we proclaim); because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.
